HAIR TRANSPLANT

Hair fall is most common problem noticed by both men and women. It may occur due to environmental, genetic and/or other aspects. Hence, Hair transplant has become most common cosmetic procedure in India.

What is Hair Transplantation?

It is a surgical technique that removes hair follicles from one part of the body called ‘Donor site/ Safe zone’ which is the back of head to the balding part of the head known as ‘Recipient site’. This technique is mainly used to treat Male baldness (Androgenic alopecia). In rare cases, women also suffer from hair loss in small smear and so also need hair transplantation. This invasive surgical procedure of hair transplantation containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding guarantees the appearance. Hair transplantation techniques is also used to restore moustache, eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair etc.

Transplantation Methods:

There are different techniques of transplanting hair follicles, everything has its own advantages and disadvantages regardless of transplantation.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): In this process the surgeon harvests a strip of skin from the posterior scalp of 6- 10 cm length, in an area of permanent hair growth i.e., from the back of head. Each incision is planned so that intact hair follicles are removed. Slivering and follicular unit are separated. This process is done carefully to avoid damage to the follicular cells used for grafting.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): This is an advanced treatment for hair fall. In this procedure surgeon will make small punctures in the scalp where the hair strands are picked and transplanted by using a special surgical needle. After the grafting process, the head areas are covered with bandages, and the follicles and scalp heal quickly in some time. This procedure is more time consuming (6-8 hrs.) than strip surgery. It gives a very natural results and quiet a painless procedure.

Before Surgery Assessment:

Before planning the hair transplant, the patient has to go for initial consultation, where the surgeon analyzes the scalp and discusses certain preferences and advises the best.

Prior to surgery, your surgeon wants to know the previous medical history. Pre-operative tests are done which will help the surgeon know about actual hair condition so that postoperative results of newly transplanted hair can be assessed accurately.

No matter what technique is used for hair transplant surgery a local anesthesia is used to make you relax and comfortable, but the patient will be aware of some kind of pressure on head.

Post-Surgery Care:

Postoperative antibiotics are most commonly prescribed to prevent infections. Some anti-inflammatories are prescribed by the surgeon to avoid unnecessary swelling. After the first few weeks of the surgery most of the transplanted hairs fall out, it is also referred as shock loss. After few months, the new hair will regrow normally and continue to thicken. You may be prescribed a hair growing drug called Minoxidil. You need to be in follow up for several months after surgery.
