gynecomastia

Gynecomastia (Gynaecomastia) commonly known as ‘man boobs’ or ‘male chest enlargement’ or ‘moobs’ is an abnormal enlargement of breasts in men due to growth of breast tissue because of hormonal imbalance of estrogen and testosterone. Gynecomastia effects one or both breasts, sometimes asymmetrically. This effects nearly 30%-60% of men..

Most common cause man boobs is due to transient estrogen (female hormone) surge during puberty (11 -14 years), which reverts to normal without any treatment in many. In few men the chest enlargement persists, which needs surgical correction. These enlarged breast tissues are neither cancerous nor cause any medical problems. Also, certain drugs (e.g. steroids, marijuana) and medical conditions (e.g. alcoholic liver disease) can cause gynecomastia – these conditions should be dealt with before considering gynecomastia surgery. Few men suffer from pain in their enlarged breasts referred to as ‘PAINFUL GYNECOMASTIA’ – making them the ideal candidates for surgical correction. Dieting and exercise are inadequate in addressing male breast enlargement.

Gynecomastia leads to extreme embarrassment and loss of self-confidence. Though its not a serious health concern, many teens suffer from low self-esteem and body shamming.

Common Mannerisms of Boys/Men with Gynecomastia:

  • Avoids removing shirt in front of others.
  • Hunch back / stoop on walking.
  • Abstaining from swimming or going to gym
  • Avoids tight shirts / t-shirts
  • Avoids socialising with friends.
  • There are 4 Grades of Gynecomastia:

  • Grade 1: Small Breast Enlargement (puffy nipple)
  • Grade 2: Moderate Breast Enlargement without skin excess.
  • Grade 3: Moderate Breast Enlargement with skin excess.
  • Grade 4: Marked Breast Enlargement with skin excess.
  • GYNECOMASTIA SURGERY:

  • Day care procedure
  • Minimally invasive
  • Almost painless
  • Minimal scar
  • Gratifying results.
  • Gynecomastia surgery is a day care procedure done under General anaesthesia. Liposuction of the excess fat on the chest done through a small 4mm incision in the anterior axillary line and gland excised through an incision in the area of nipple areola. As these incisions are very small, there is very minimal scarring which is almost unnoticeable. After surgery a tight compression garment(vest) is applied to prevent any blood or fluid accumulation over the chest muscles and the skin. Gynecomastia surgery gives a very gratifying result.

    Post-Surgery Instructions:

You are expected to wear a tight compression garment or vest continuously for 24 hrs for 30 days. This prevents any blood or body fluid collection and also prevents swelling.

  • No driving for 10 days after surgery.
  • No cardio exercises for 15 days after surgery
  • No heavy lifting exercises for 45 days after surgery.
  • The results of gynecomastia are visible immediately. However, the final result of gynecomastia surgery will only be visible after 3-6 months. While the scars are permanent, they fade with time and are almost scarless. You can start your light work the very next day. It takes one week to completely resume to your office work.
